South African police fired on stone-throwing crowds, killing two black men, and a third black man was found stabbed to death in a separate incident, police said. One man was killed when police fired on a crowd stoning police vehicles near Standerton, about 90 miles southeast of Johannesburg. The other was shot to death in a similar incident in Katlehong, a township south of Johannesburg. The stabbing victim was killed by a group of blacks in Mpata, a township near the southeastern city of Pietermaritzburg, the site of factional fighting between anti-apartheid groups.
