Guidance on 911 Call Brings Life to Infant

A deputy sheriff on a 911 telephone line in Pico Rivera guided two day-care workers through cardiopulmonary resuscitation of an infant boy who had stopped breathing Tuesday.

The boy, Jason Gray, was in good condition at Presbyterian Hospital in Whittier, where he was taken after apparently suffering from sudden infant death syndrome.

Authorities said Deputy Jeanne Ramirez got an emergency call from Natalie Hernandez, an employee at Gloria’s Day Care Center in Whittier.

“This lady . . . told me she had a 2-month-old baby who had stopped breathing,” Ramirez said. “I told her to depress between the ribs gently with her fingers and give mouth-to-mouth breathing at short intervals.”

Hernandez relayed the instructions to Gloria Muro, owner of the center, who was trying to revive the boy. “After a few minutes,” Ramirez said, “Gloria got on the phone and said really excitedly, ‘He’s breathing, he’s breathing!’ ”
