WASHINGTON — Mike Mansfield, U.S. ambassador to Japan and longtime Senate majority leader, underwent triple coronary bypass surgery Tuesday and was described as making a good recovery.
Mansfield, 84, was brought to Walter Reed Army Medical Center on Saturday. He had undergone surgery in December at the Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu but Walter Reed spokesman Peter Esker said the earlier surgery was unrelated to the heart problem.
“He is recovering satisfactorily from coronary artery surgery,” Esker said.
