British military helicopters in Northern Ireland are being equipped to defend against Soviet-made SAM-7 missiles that the outlawed Irish Republican Army may have in its arsenal, Jane’s Defense Weekly reported. Without citing a source, the authoritative British magazine said U.S.-made systems are being fitted onto helicopters to detect incoming missiles, jam guidance systems and send out decoy flares. The British army declined to comment on the report. Parts for the shoulder-fired SAM-7s were found on a ship that was seized late last year by French authorities in the English Channel. The vessel was allegedly transporting arms to the IRA.
