Area Roundup : No. 1 USC to Swim in Invitational

USC, the top-ranked men’s swimming team in the country, will be one of 20 schools competing in the UC Irvine Invitational Saturday and Sunday at Irvine’s Heritage Park. Competition begins at 9 a.m. each day.

USC is led by three former Orange County swimmers--Mike O’Brien of Costa Mesa, Steve Bentley of Fountain Valley and Dan Jorgensen of Mission Viejo. The Irvine men’s and women’s teams also will compete.

Augie Garrido, University of Illinois baseball coach, will be roasted by such baseball notables as Don Sutton, Lefty Gomez and Tim Wallach in a fund-raising dinner for the Cal State Fullerton baseball program on Jan. 21 at the Red Lion Inn in Costa Mesa.

Garrido will be honored for his 15-year career at Fullerton in which he won 2 NCAA championships, 4 regional titles and 12 conference championships.

Individual dinner tickets are $100. A table of nine plus one major league player is $1,000.

Saddleback College will hold all-comers track and field meets on Jan. 9, 16 and 30 and Feb. 6 on the Gaucho track.

A $2 entry fee for an unlimited number of events is required for each participant. The meets start with running events at 9 a.m. and field events at 10.

Mike Dodd, Huntington Beach High School baseball coach, has been selected as coach of Team Southern California, which will compete in the Stockholm International Tournament, July 1-3.

Team Southern California tryouts are open to all players born after June 30, 1968. Tryouts are scheduled for Jan. 16 and 17 at 11 a.m. at Huntington Beach High School. The 10-day tour will cost $1,998 per player plus a non-refundable registration fee of $65.

Southern California Over-The-Line softball is accepting teams for its sixth annual Super Bowl grass tournament at Mile Square Park in Fountain Valley on Jan. 16.

Entry fees are $24 per team. All teams are guaranteed at least four games. Men’s and women’s divisions start play at 9 a.m.

The Angels will sponsor a youth night clinic at the Celebrity Theater in Anaheim at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Scheduled speakers include catcher Bob Boone, outfielder Chili Davis and pitching coach Marcel Lachemann.

Those 18 years and younger in attendence will receive a copy of the “Topps California Angels Baseball Card Book.” Also, 20 pairs of 1988 Angel tickets will be given away.

The Western Medical Center in Anaheim and the Angels are sponsoring an A-Team Invitational Golf tournament Jan. 25 at the Yorba Linda Country Club at 11 a.m.

A donation of $150 includes green fee, cart and awards banquet hosted by KMPC’s Jim Lange.
