In an interview with a Birmingham, Ala., newspaper, Auburn football Coach Pat Dye, who ordered a 30-yard field goal that gave his team a 16-16 tie with Syracuse in the Sugar Bowl, criticized television commentator Bob Griese.
On the telecast, Griese said that Dye should have tried to get off two plays in four seconds.
“Bob Griese is a . . . idiot,” Dye said. “Who the . . . ever heard of getting off two plays in four seconds? We had no timeouts left, either.”
