Suspected Sikh extremists shot dead a politician and three other people in Punjab state and a jailed extremist leader escaped, officials in Amritsar, India, said. Two of those killed near the town of Ludhiana were former state Public Relations Minister Tarlochan Singh Riyastri and his chauffeur. Sikh Satnam Singh Bawa escaped from custody when his police escort was ambushed near Amritsar, police said. Bawa is a suspect in the massacre of 36 bus passengers in Haryana state last year. Earlier, police said, Sikhs killed a village headman’s wife and a youth in separate incidents in Punjab.
