Leftist rebels Saturday attacked two villages in eastern El Salvador as an international commission arrived in the capital to verify compliance with the Central American peace plan, government officials said.

The rebels attacked San Buena Ventura and Villa del Triunfo, about 75 miles east of San Salvador, wounding three militiamen and blocking traffic on the Pan American Highway, which passes through the towns.

The army ferried in troops by helicopter and said the towns’s civil defense force repelled the guerrilla attack.

Meanwhile, the International Commission of Verification and Compliance arrived in the capital to meet 14 government and private organizations during its two-day visit to El Salvador.

The Central American peace accord, signed Aug. 7 in Guatemala, calls for a general amnesty for political prisoners and a cease-fire in regional insurgencies.
