Male and female athletes of the year...
Male and female athletes of the year for 1987 have been selected by the governing bodies of the U.S. Olympic Organizing Committee.
In all, 43 sports organizations, plus 2 representing handicapped athletes, selected 87 athletes as outstanding in their respective sports.
They include Carl Lewis and UCLA’s Jackie Joyner-Kersee in track and field, Kent Bostick and Rebecca Twigg in cycling, Greg Louganis and Michele Mitchell in diving, Peter Oppegard and Jill Watson in figure skating, Scott Johnson and Huntington Beach’s Sabrina Mar in gymnastics, and David Wharton of USC and Janet Evans of Placentia in swiming.
Honored in water polo were Craig Wilson of Pacific Palisades and the University of California, and Cal State Long Beach’s Simon La Pay. Woman athlete of the year in badminton is Joy Kitzmiller of Manhattan Beach and Stanford.
The USOC’s Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year will be named in April.
