“Summer Festival 88,” the official title of the Hollywood Bowl season this summer, will encompass 58 events, according to general director Ernest Fleischmann. It includes 37 concerts by the Los Angeles Philharmonic, five by the Pittsburgh Symphony in its first Bowl appearances, five Virtuoso Series concerts, three performances by the Philharmonic Institute Orchestra, and a six-event jazz series.

The season begins July 3 and 4 with two Fourth of July concerts, featuring Andy Williams and fireworks. The preview week continues with two Mozart programs, conducted by David Alan Miller.

A gala concert with flutist James Galway, conducted by Yuri Temirkanov of the Kirov Opera in his Bowl debut, opens the 10-week subscription series July 12. The more overtly pops programs include “The Great American Concert,” a “Tribute to Irving Berlin,” “Bernstein on Broadway” and the perennial Gershwin concert.
