Gallup Poll Gives Bush, Dukakis Wide N. H. Leads

PRINCETON, N.J. — Vice President George Bush and Massachusetts Gov. Michael S. Dukakis have wide leads over their respective challengers among New Hampshire voters who expect to vote on primary day, Feb. 15, according to a Gallup Organization poll released today.
In the Republican race, Bush leads Kansas Sen. Bob Dole by a 38%-23% margin. Upstate New York Rep. Jack Kemp is third in the GOP race with 15%.
Former Delaware Gov. Pierre S. (Pete) du Pont IV with 5%, and both former evangelist Pat Robertson and former Secretary of State Alexander M. Haig Jr. with 4% trail the field, with 11% undecided.
The sample is based on interviews with 545 Republican primary voters and has an error margin of plus or minus 5 percentage points.
Hart Trails Substantially
On the Democratic side, Dukakis received 39% support, giving him a substantial margin over former Colorado Sen. Gary Hart, 19%, and Illinois Sen. Paul Simon, 12%, his closest rivals in the survey.
The percentages of the remaining four Democratic candidates are the Rev. Jesse Jackson and Missouri Rep. Richard A. Gephardt, both 5%; Tennessee Sen. Albert Gore Jr., 4%; former Arizona Gov. Bruce Babbitt, 3%; and undecided, 13%.
The sample is based on interviews with 416 Democratic primary voters and has an error margin of plus or minus 5 percentage points. Both GOP and Democratic interviews were conducted Jan. 8-10.
