Downey Appoints New City Attorney
The Downey City Council on Tuesday appointed Peter M. Thorson to replace former City Atty. Carl K. Newton, who resigned Jan. 1.
The council approved the appointment on a 4-1 vote. Councilman James S. Santangelo said he opposed the appointment because Thorson had not kept him fully informed of recent legal questions pending before the council. Thorson was acting city attorney before his appointment.
Thorson, 36, was the former city attorney of Azusa and serves as redevelopment attorney for Alhambra and West Covina. He works for the Los Angeles law firm of Burke, Williams & Sorensen, the same firm that employs Newton.
