Gem of a Story

Now their stories can be told. Merv Griffin gave his chum Eva Gabor the most incredible gift for Christmas, jewelry designer Lee Brevard informs us. Mind you, Brevard is prejudiced. He spent six weeks making the “extravagant” necklace out of pearls, pave diamonds and a rare 20-carat topaz that Griffin brought back from Brazil. Set designer Jeremy Railton chose something a little more standard for Anjelica Huston. He gave her a silver charm bracelet with six different animals on it. The explanation is quite simple. “He has a farm,” Brevard says, “and he thought it would be funny.”

Husbands’ Treat

We know what their wives will be doing soon. Both John Ratzenberger (Cliff, the postman on “Cheers”) and Robert Webber (Maddie’s father on “Moonlighting”) were in the Georgette Klinger salon in Beverly Hills buying gift certificates. According to a salon spokesperson, Ratzenberger chose deluxe full-day beauty treatments for his wife, and Webber opted to give his wife the gift of facials. As for ex-Dodger Steve Garvey: He was in too, shopping for “an unnamed lady.”

25 Years Young

Listen caught up with designer Geoffrey Beene the other day and asked him about his anniversary--he’s been in business 25 years now. He says he’s helping the L.A. fashion industry plan a show of his work and an auction of L.A. designer clothes, set for Feb. 12 at the Century Plaza Hotel. Nice idea, but Beene wonders about their calling it a retrospective. “I’m not sailing into the sunset,” he reminded us. He has things to do before he takes that trip, including meet Stephen Spielberg. He wants the Hollywood whiz kid to come to his fashion show, a benefit for AIDS Project, L.A. “With all the children getting AIDS now, a lover of children like Spielberg could awaken a whole other segment of society,” Beene says. Loretta Young will emcee that evening . . . wonder what she’ll wear?

If the Shoe Fits

Thinking of hitting the Maud Frizon shoe sale? Don’t bother if you wear Size 7, 7 1/2 or 8. “A Saudi princess came in and bought every pair,” Tom Bruno of the Rodeo Drive shop tells Listen. “She wiped out the complete stock.”

Little House in the Valley

You know the Greg Sumner house on “Knots Landing”? Well, it’s actually Ballymeehan, the Simi Valley home of Redken executives Paula and John Meehan. Each morning when the cast and crew arrive, “they are greeted by generous supplies of Redken products,” company publicists say. The freebies are said to include Vivagen, a hair-enrichment treatment for thinning hair. Listen has no word yet of any hair-raising results.
