BISHOP, Calif. — A Southern California man admitted to a hospital for psychiatric evaluation was shot and killed by police officers after he armed himself with two knives and attempted to escape, officials said.
Craig Petersen, 30, of Northridge was shot to death Friday afternoon as he attempted to leave Northern Inyo Hospital through an emergency room entrance, hospital Administrator Herm Spencer reported.
“He was shot and killed on hospital property near the helicopter landing pad,” Spencer said. Further details of the shooting were not available.
According to Bishop Police Department records, the man was admitted to the hospital early Friday morning after officers took him into custody when they saw him acting irrationally and trying to start a fight at a downtown supermarket.
