38th in World Ousts Shriver
Unseeded Australian Anne Minter routed fourth-seeded American Pam Shriver 6-1, 6-1 today to advance to the quarterfinals of the $1.9-million Australian Open.
Minter, ranked 38th in the world, took advantage of her opponent’s poor mobility, caused by an aggravated groin injury, to post the biggest victory of her career. In other women’s matches, top-seeded Steffi Graf and Hana Mandlikova advanced to the quarterfinals. Graff dumped Catarina Lindqvist of Sweden 6-0, 7-5 and Mandlikova overpowered American Lori McNeil 6-2, 6-4.
