A record 161 countries have entered the Summer Olympic Games, the International Olympic Committee said. On Sunday, Syria became the 161st country to enter the Games, which begin Sept. 17 at Seoul, South Korea.

The deadline for entering the Games was 3 p.m. PST Sunday. IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch will hold a press conference today in Lausanne, Switzerland.

The previous record attendance was 140 countries at the 1984 Los Angeles Games.
