Long Beach : Kell to Announce He’ll Run

Share

Mayor Ernie Kell is expected to formally announce today that he will seek election in April to a term as Long Beach’s first full-time mayor.

Kell, 59, planned to make the announcement from his El Dorado Park Estates home. He has served as 5th District councilman since 1975, and has held the title of mayor since 1984 by virtue of a vote among council members. A retired general contractor who became wealthy through real estate investments, Kell has lived in Long Beach since 1953.

Under a charter change approved by voters, the mayor’s position will become directly elected by voters throughout the city.
