Three people were shot Thursday during an attempted robbery in an Anaheim motel room, police said.

Police arrived at the Stage Stop Motel at 2912 W. Lincoln Ave. about 9:20 a.m. and found a man and a woman who had been shot several times. Three suspects, who police said had been in the room with the victims at the time of the shooting, were arrested a short time later, according to Sgt. Mike Briley.

One shooting victim, John Edward Rhein, 29, was listed in stable condition at UCI Medical Center, and the second, Patricia Ann Jessen, 27, was treated and released, hospital officials said.

Traffic officers spotted two suspects, Jackie Lee McDonald, 30, and Bruce Reid, 40, walking in the area and arrested them for suspicion of armed robbery and assault with a deadly weapon, Briley said.

The third suspect, Robert McDonald, 27, was located at a Stanton hospital where he had gone for treatment of a gunshot wound, Briley said. Robert McDonald was later transferred to UCI Medical Center where he was held in custody and listed in stable condition.

Reid and Jackie McDonald were jailed in lieu of $50,000 bail, and Robert McDonald was held in custody at the hospital, police said. Police were unsure whether the McDonalds were related.

All five people had been in the motel room when three of them apparently pulled out handguns and tried to rob the other two, Briley said. He said all of them live in Anaheim and knew each other. Police recovered three handguns. They said no money was taken.
