The World : Ethiopian Aid Convoy Hit

Share

Rebels fighting the Marxist government attacked a 17-truck commercial convoy in northern Ethiopia, destroying seven trucks carrying 170 tons of relief food for drought victims in Eritrea and Tigre provinces, relief and diplomatic officials said. The Eritrean People’s Liberation Front claimed responsibility for the attack but said the vehicles were part of a military convoy. The convoy was headed for Asmara, the administrative capital of Eritrea, about 425 miles north of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia’s capital. An estimated 5 million people are threatened with famine in the two northern provinces.
