Local News in Brief : Bus Tokens Distributed
The Southern California Rapid Transit District has begun distributing 1.3 million tokens for free bus rides in its largest-ever effort to boost sagging ridership.
The first 50,000 tokens are being distributed at most Boys Market stores to shoppers making a minimum purchase of $5. Customers of El Pollo Loco restaurants and other retail outlets will receive the tokens in promotions beginning in March.
Sample tokens also will appear in La Opinion, the city’s largest Spanish-language newspaper.
The RTD is hoping to attract 10,000 to 30,000 new riders.
