Local News in Brief : Countywide : Minority Leaders Back Lungren for Treasurer
Leaders of various Orange County minority groups Tuesday endorsed Rep. Daniel E. Lungren (R-Long Beach), Gov. George Deukmejian’s nominee as state treasurer to replace Jesse Unruh, who died last August.
Citing Lungren’s fiscal conservatism and active role in gaining passage of the amnesty section of the 1986 Immigration Reform Act, community leaders said he had demonstrated commitment to issues that were unpopular in his more affluent congressional district, which includes part of northwest Orange County.
Lungren’s confirmation is expected to be determined by mid-February, according to Raoul Silva, an immigrant consultant in Orange County who arranged Tuesday’s press conference at the Santa Ana Civic Center.
Taking part in the press conference, organized by “Ethnics in Support of Congressman Dan Lungren’s Nomination for State Treasurer,” were Orange County Supervisor Gaddi H. Vasquez, Fountain Valley Mayor Barbara Brown and Santa Ana Councilman John Acosta. The officials said they hoped to dispel criticisms that Lungren did not support issues affecting minorities and the poor.
