About 7,500 gallons of sewage spilled into the ocean Monday afternoon at Calumet Park in La Jolla, County Health Services reported Tuesday.

The spill occurred when a sewer main adjoining Pump Station 42 at 5387 Calumet Ave. became partially blocked. The sewage overflowed and ran into a nearby storm drain that empties into the ocean, a County Health Services spokeswoman said.

A city utilities crew contained the spill around 1 p.m. Monday. Signs warning of the contamination were posted at Calumet Park for 100 yards on either side of the spill, and will remain until today at the earliest, the spokeswoman said.
