Local News in Brief : County Nearly Doubles Developers’ Park Fees

Share

The Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Tuesday to nearly double the park fees assessed developers of subdivisions.

The fees, which are used to rehabilitate or create county parks, had not been increased since 1982, even though a county ordinance calls for an annual adjustment.

The new fee schedule, however, does not satisfy a county ordinance that requires fees to be tied to the value of an acre of unimproved land in the area where a subdivision is being built.

In December, the board instructed county officials to discuss devising a more realistic fee schedule with developers who oppose dramatic increases in the fees. The county is expected to present the board with a different fee formula in March.

“I’m happy,” said Ralph Cryder, the county’s parks director after the vote. But, he added, “I wish we could have done better. I’m sure we will as time goes on.”

The new fees will take effect in 30 days.
