Cover Girls Had Baldwins’ Party Covered

A pyramid of fur coats smothered a bedroom in Deeann and Al Baldwin’s Emerald Bay manse on Saturday night.

“Now there’s a picture,” said Cover Girl founder Joanne Mix, whose own fluff of burgundy fox was at the top of the heap.

Pictures are what Cover Girls are all about. The 66 members, who, with annual dues of $85, help bring dance to the Orange County Performing Arts Center, all have had their pictures on county publications, “not only because of their appearance, but for their contributions to the community,” said Mix, who looked like a walking stained-glass window in a shimmery, multi-hued sheath by Sister Max.

The couples’ dinner party staged in the Baldwins’ 10,000-square-foot Mediterranean-style home marked one of two formal dinners held annually by the group.

“The best part of belonging to Cover Girls is coming to gorgeous parties like this,” said Mary Ann Miller, gowned in a pouf of purple taffeta.

“The beautiful women aren’t bad either,” said her husband, Len.

Dinner was wonderful--chicken in clouds of pastry, crepes Grand Marnier--and touring the house was marvelous.

Consider the amenities: four-story and cliff-hung over an emerald green bay; glass elevator; towering palm trees inside and out (“We wanted a house that made you feel like you were on the beach,” said Al Baldwin, a developer of planned communities. “We didn’t even want walls.”); a chic cabana designed after a dining room at the Twin Dolphins Hotel in Cabo San Lucas (the Baldwins’ favorite hangout there); a wall-recessed 300-gallon aquarium with exotic fish caught by Baldwin himself; a mini-gym with state-of-the-art equipment; a de rigueur security system, and a sun roof in the living room (discovered accidentally by Len Miller, who pushed a wrong button).

“I love it all,” Mary Ann Miller said, “especially Deeann’s closet. It has clothing racks that move. You know, like the dry cleaners.”

Also on the heady scene: Irmagaard and Peter Andrich; Phyllis and Jack Baillie; Sandra and Jerry Beigel; Patricia Brennan with Maurice Allard; Lois Driggs Cannon with fiance Buzz Aldrin; Athalie Clarke with Dr. Walter Coombs; Jack and Dori deKruif; Barbara and Jim Glabman; Judie and George Argyros; Ollie and Stan Hill; Rusty and Bill Hood; Cleva and Robert Howard; Sue and Marshall Jarvie; Nora and Vin Jorgensen; Mary Ann and Len Miller; Hedda and Steve Marosi; Marilyn and Tom Nielsen; Ann and Russ Pange; Barbara and Domenick Roppolo; Jackie and Jim Rodgers; Mary and Lou Sabatasso; Ann and Wolf Stern; Sheila and Ygal Sonenshine, and Cindy and John Galardi.
