Two men were shot to death Wednesday night, and a third was critically injured in a shooting involving members of the San Diego Police Department’s Border Crime Prevention Unit.

The incident occurred about 8:40 p.m. in a remote canyon near the border, according to a spokesman for the San Diego Fire Department.

The men were carrying fake guns, a source said.
