The arrest of a man suspected of being a Red Brigades terrorist led to discovery of a plot to kidnap or assassinate Ciriaco De Mita, leader of Italy's dominant Christian Democratic Party, Italian news media reported. The alleged plot came to light after Antonino Fosso, 31, sought by police for seven years, was arrested in Rome on Wednesday. Media reports said terrorists planned to either assassinate or kidnap De Mita. The 59-year-old secretary general of the Christian Democrats since 1981, told reporters that he was aware that a group of suspected terrorists had been scouting the area near his home in Rome but said he was not sure if he was the intended target.
