Movie Reviews : ‘Galactic Gigolo’ Fails to Score

Share

‘Galactic Gigolo” (citywide) owes no debt to its U. S. cousin, “American Gigolo.” Its star, producer and co-writer, Carmine Capobianco, is light-years from Richard Gere, being cast literally in the script as a chubby broccoli. One might say the film was a glorified home movie, but that would be too severe a disservice to most non-professional efforts.

The story kicks off on a distant planet where Eoj (that’s Joe backwards and of no significance to the plot), the vegetable, wins the grand prize on a game show. His payoff is a trip to Prospect, Conn., where he’ll be able to change into human form and a silver jumpsuit and woo the female populace for two weeks.

The film’s sole touch of novelty is the intrusion of a journalist (Debi Thibeault) who persuades the alien to let her tag along for purposes of writing his biography. However, they and her nerdy photographer run afoul of improbably dumb Italian gangsters and Hasidic hillbillies who for some unknown reason feel obliged to make the narrative hopelessly cluttered. “Galactic Gigolo” (MPAA rated-R, for nudity and profane language) is sub-bargain-basement film-making at its worst--on Earth or anywhere else.
