Local News in Brief : Tustin : In Close Vote, Council Approves Pay Increase
City Council members voted 3-2 Monday night to give themselves a 10% pay raise. If approved after a second reading scheduled for the council’s Feb. 16 meeting, the new council salary ordinance would increase members’ pay from $400 to $440 a month. Such approval would establish the first salary increase for the council since 1985.
Earlier in the evening, council members chose Ronald Hoesterey to succeed Richard B. Edgar as mayor.
The pay increase drew strong opposition from councilmen Earl Prescott and John Kelly.
Kelly said the pay issue should be decided by the voters. “We should put the question in the hands of our bosses out there, the general citizenry,” he said.
However, council members Ursula Kennedy, Hoesterey and Edgar said that the council should decide.
