Local News in Brief : El Toro : Anaheim Firm to Extend Runway at Marine Base
The U.S. Navy has awarded a $10.9-million contract to an Anaheim company to repair and extend one of the key runways at El Toro Marine Corps Air Station.
Runways 34R and 34L parallel each other, but 34R is about 3,700 feet longer and can handle landings and takeoffs of all sizes of aircraft. Runway 34R is 10,000 feet long, and when it is closed for repairs, some aircraft landing at the Marine base cannot use the shorter runway 34L, forcing pilots to use an alternate runway that requires an east-west approach over residential Irvine.
Blair Paving Inc. was among 11 companies bidding on the job, which is expected to begin this spring and is scheduled to be completed in August, 1989, a Navy spokesman in Washington said. Beside the runway extension, the contract calls for minor repairs to other runways at the base.
El Toro is a tactical airfield used by the Marines and Navy for training flights.
