Gas, Liquor Sales at Mini-Marts OKd

The Costa Mesa City Council voted Monday to allow mini-marts to sell gasoline and alcoholic beverages. Councilman Peter Buffa cast the dissenting vote.

In reversing a 1986 vote, the council majority said it was complying with a new state law that forbids blanket bans on the sale of gas and alcoholic beverages at mini-marts.

The new ordinance will affect about six businesses, said Councilwoman Mary Hornbuckle, who had proposed the 1986 ban. The city, on a case-by-case basis, will still be able to ban the sale of alcohol in places it considers too close to schools or residential areas, Hornbuckle said.
