William C. Raftery, Key Pentagon Official During World War II

William C. Raftery, 88, a retired Army colonel who was head of the Pentagon’s printing and publications department when that massive unit reproduced the secret reports of the wartime investigation of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and the decision that led to the dropping of the two atomic bombs that ended World War II. A holder of the Legion of Merit, Raftery had served in the Navy during World War I and entered the publications and printing industry after discharge. He then enlisted in the Army during the second world war. He returned to his printing and publishing career in Los Angeles after his second discharge. In Santa Monica on Saturday.
