Santa Monica : Council Will Discuss Pier Plan
Merchants on the Santa Monica Pier are making telephone calls and distributing leaflets urging residents to attend next Tuesday’s City Council meeting, where a pier renovation plan will be discussed.
The merchants, who manage the bumper cars, amusement stands and fast-food joints on the pier, oppose the plan. They say it fails to provide sufficient parking and doesn’t take into account traffic that would be generated.
The proposal includes $7 million in improvements that would be made by the city and $15.8 million in commercial development by private investors, which would include restaurants, amusement concessions and retail stores.
The 13 businesses operating on the pier fear that they may be squeezed out by developers charging higher rents.
Harold Kleinman, president of the pier Lessees Assn., acknowledged that the plan is likely to be approved by the council. But he hoped a big turnout by residents concerned with how the pier will be developed could influence council members to adopt some revisions in the plan.
The meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m. at City Hall.
