Backers of a county slow-growth initiative--known officially as the Citizens’ Sensible Growth and Traffic Control Initiative--have until Tuesday to file nearly 66,000 signatures of registered voters to place the measure on the county ballot. Initiative backers reported late in January that they still needed 15,000 signatures to qualify the measure for the June 7 election. Committees are also attempting to put similar initiatives on the ballot in many of the county’s cities.

Tuesday is also the deadline for backers of a countywide initiative that would place all future county jails in Santa Ana. The measure, which requires 66,000 signatures to qualify for the June ballot, is designed to head off a decision by the Board of Supervisors last July to place a 6,000-bed maximum security jail in remote Gypsum Canyon.
