Local News in Brief : Countywide : Hazardous Waste Hearings Scheduled
The first of eight public hearings will be held Wednesday on a proposed hazardous waste management plan that establishes policies, programs and projected needs for treatment facilities in Orange County.
The hearings, which will continue through March, are aimed at getting public review and comment on the county’s draft plan for hazardous waste, required by a 1986 state law.
The law, known as the Tanner Act, requires that each county plan and manage its own hazardous waste, including siting and review of its own treatment sites. The law comes as state and local governments face a 1990 deadline banning disposal of untreated toxic waste.
Wednesday’s hearing will be at 7 p.m. in the Fullerton Library’s Room B, 353 W. Commonwealth Ave.
Other hearings are scheduled as follows: Feb. 18 in the San Juan Capistrano City Council Chambers, Feb. 24 at the Orange County Fire Department training center in Anaheim, March 2 at the Cypress Senior Center, March 9 at Spurgeon School’s music room in Santa Ana, March 16 at Huntington Beach City Council Chambers, March 24 at the Costa Mesa Community Center and March 31 at the Saddleback Valley Unified School District offices in Mission Viejo.
All of the meetings will begin at 7 p.m.
The Orange County Tanner Advisory Committee and the League of Women Voters are holding the public hearings to allow citizens a say-so in how the county’s waste will be handled.
