Local News in Brief : Santa Ana : Driver, 17, Arrested in Pedestrian’s Death
A 48-year-old Santa Ana man was killed in a downtown crosswalk early Tuesday after he was run over by a motorist who was captured minutes later by another driver who chased him, police said.
Jose Hector Nava was killed “instantly” at 11:15 a.m. Tuesday as he walked across 2nd Street at Main Street, said Maureen Thomas, a spokeswoman for the Santa Ana Police Department.
A 17-year-old Santa Ana youth was arrested shortly afterward on suspicion of felony hit-and-run, driving under the influence and driving without a license, Thomas said. The suspect, whose name was withheld because of his age, was booked into Juvenile Hall, Thomas said.
A witness, identified as Jon Tate, 24, of Tustin, followed in his car after the suspect sped away from the accident and headed northbound on Main Street. Tate captured the suspect when the youth parked his car in the 900 block of East 3rd Street, then held him until police arrived, Thomas said.
