City Council members on Tuesday unanimously approved a 318-acre development to be built during the next two decades in a rock quarry west of Interstate 15, between Friars Road and Aero Drive.

The project, proposed by StoneCrest Associates, is located in the burgeoning I-15 corridor and will eventually include 1.2 million square feet of research and development space, 2.5 million square feet of offices, and a 400-room hotel.

The rock quarry is owned by the Daley family, one of the partners in StoneCrest. Advocates of the project said it would take the scarred rock pits and transform them into an environmentally sensitive development that saves canyons as part of the 140 acres of open space.

To encourage council members to vote for approval, StoneCrest has promised to build a new interchange leading to the development from I-15, and have promised to build and dedicate rail tracks and a trolley station.

Developers would also widen Aero, and connect Daley Center Drive to San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium, an improvement hailed by Councilman Ed Struiksma as invaluable to help the flow of traffic to and from sporting events.
