Lynwood : School Concerns Voiced

Lack of heating in the auditorium and gymnasium, a desire for more student parking, a call for armed security guards and longer library hours were some of the concerns expressed to the school board by Lynwood High School student leaders.

Lynwood Unified School District Board of Education members had agreed to meet with student leaders to hear their concerns. The groups met for more than two hours recently in the high school auditorium.

Students were told that heating and air-conditioning equipment is scheduled to be installed later this year. There will be no additional student parking nor armed guards on campus. Expansion of the library hours will be investigated.

“We have authorized three additional security guards for the high school but the majority of the board clearly is not in favor of armed guards,” said Willard H. Reed, board president.

Both the junior high school and high school now have security guards. Students, parents and administrators have expressed concerns about gang-related activities in the community around the schools.

Principal Larry C. Tripplett also has asked the board to install metal detectors at the high school’s entrances to prevent students from carrying weapons. The board turned him down, saying the district could not afford them.
