College Roundup : USC’s Two Innings Enough to Beat Irvine

The USC baseball team scored four runs in both the third and eighth innings to defeat UC Irvine, 9-3, in a nonconference game Wednesday at Anteater Field.

With Irvine leading, 1-0, in the third, USC went ahead, 4-1, on Bret Barberie’s grand slam.

Irvine cut the lead to 4-3 with runs in the fourth and fifth innings. The Anteaters (4-4) were still trailing, 4-3, when they loaded the bases in the seventh with one out. But Oscar DeChavez popped out to second and Chris Dray popped out to third.

In another nonconference game:

Chapman 6, United States International University 5--Sophomore left-hander Dave Bird struck out a career-high 11 batters and teammate Chris Cutliff went 3 for 4 with a double and a home run to lead Chapman (6-2) at Hart Park. Bird allowed five hits and walked three in 7 innings and left leading, 5-2.

In men’s tennis:

UCLA 9, Chapman 0--The Bruins, ranked No. 3 in Division I, handed Chapman, the No. 1 team in Division II, its first loss of the season. Playing at Los Angeles, Buff Farrow defeated Miles Walker at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 1-6, 6-2.

In men’s volleyball:

Chapman 3, Azusa Pacific 0--Bob Jones had eight kills and Kurt Dumm added seven in the 15-5, 15-4, 15-12 nonconference victory in Orange. Chapman is 2-2.
