Fairfax : Holden Delays Road Widening
The Los Angeles City Council delayed a decision Wednesday on a proposal to widen a stretch of Fairfax Avenue to give Councilman Nate Holden more time to work out a compromise with residents opposed to the project.
Holden requested the one-week delay so he can again meet with residents from the three-quarter-mile stretch from Venice to Pico boulevards. He met last week with leaders of the Fairfax Homeowners Assn., which opposes the widening project, and said he is now encouraged that the two sides will come to an agreement.
City engineers, citing traffic and safety problems along the road, have proposed widening it to 46 feet--as much as 16 feet wider than the existing road. The homeowners group, fearful the project will ruin the residential character of the neighborhood, has proposed a 36-foot width. City engineers say that a 36-foot road will not solve congestion problems.
