Tinkering With Airport’s Name

Share

It was not a mistake to name our airport after one of Orange County’s most famous citizens, as the Times’ editorial (Feb. 7) claimed.

The editorial said that people don’t refer to our airport as John Wayne Airport and that out-of-towners may be confused by the name. Why should their impression influence our Board of Supervisors’ choice for the airport’s name? Did Chicago consult Orange County passengers when they picked the name O’Hare?

I doubt if the airport’s name is as inappropriate and confusing as the editorial suggests. A story about airport security appeared in the same section of The Times as the editorial. The headline read: “Employees at John Wayne Bypassing Security.” Were Times copy editors confused? Did readers understand the headline?

Please stop tinkering with a good thing. Duke was a part of Orange County, and it’s nice to let visitors know it.
