Tile Institute Presents Its Top Award to McIntosh

McIntosh Tile won the top award at the Ceramic Tile Institute dinner Saturday at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel.

It was the third time in 15 years that the Arcadia firm has won the top award. The winning project was a five-story mural for St. John Neumann Catholic Church in Irvine. The mural was intricately tiled with Byzantine glass from Italy, and designed by Isabel & Edith Piczek, Construction Art Center, Los Angeles.

Four members of the industry received special honors. They are Joe Sepe, vice president of Mercury Tile Co., Los Angeles, the Golden Tile Award for outstanding service to the industry; Joe Johansen, president of Johansen Tile Co., Los Angeles, named Contractor of the Year by the Western States Ceramic Tile Contractors Assn.

Carol Ognibene, office manager for C. O. Tile, San Clemente, was named Woman of the Year for service to the industry, and Betty Knesel, executive director of the contractors’ association for more than 20 years, received the Manny Fleishman Special Recognition Award.
