Up to 80,000 documents are missing from U.S.-run archives in West Berlin that house millions of files on Nazis in World War II, and they could have been used to blackmail people, the Berliner Morgenpost newspaper said. A U.S. spokesman in West Berlin called the figure speculative but confirmed that Americans are taking part in an inquiry at the Berlin Document Center. The newspaper said that over the years, sensitive and secret records of some of the Third Reich’s most important figures have been stolen from the center. It said unidentified persons have made millions of dollars by using the stolen documents to blackmail “prominent personalities.”
