College Baseball : UCLA Breezes Past SDSU for 2-Game Sweep : Bruins Pour It on With Eight Runs in the 8th Inning to Cement the Victory

UCLA scored eight runs off three pitchers in the eighth inning to seal a 16-7 nonconference victory over San Diego State Sunday at SDSU’s Smith Field.

The victory completed a two-game sweep of the Aztecs. Saturday, UCLA pounded SDSU, 11-5.

Nikco Riesgo hit a home run in the first inning, giving the Aztecs their only lead. UCLA (7-2) snapped a 1-1 tie with four-runs in the fourth inning.

Starter Dave Zancanaro (2-0) went five innings to earn the victory. Rob Brown (0-1) went the opening 2 for the loss.

Harry Henderson was 4 for 4 with 2 RBIs and scored a run for the Aztecs (3-3). SDSU committed five errors.

Rich Crane struck out 14, including the first five batters, to lead Fresno State to a 7-1 nonconference victory over the University of San Diego at USD’s Cunningham Stadium.

Crane (2-1), who pitched a complete game, had a perfect game through 4 innings before walking Andy Roberts. The next batter, Chris Bwy, spoiled the no-hitter when he singled to right. Starter Lou Skertich (1-2) went seven innings in the losing effort.

Fresno State (4-3) scored four runs in the fifth. It was their second victory against USD this weekend. Saturday night, Fresno beat the Toreros, 14-2.

USD (2-5) scored its only run in the ninth innning, when Bwy’s sacrifice fly to left scored Dave Rolls from third.

Kevin Tahan went 3 for 5 with three doubles and an RBI to lead United States International University to a 7-6 victory over Grand Canyon College in a nonconference game at USIU.

Wally Trice (2-0) went 8 innings for the victory. Trice was relieved by his catcher, Larry Oedewaldt in the ninth. Losing pitcher Gary Weems (0-2) worked seven innings.

Four Grand Canyon players homered. John Marchese had a solo homer in the third, Tim Salmon had a solo in the fourth, Rich Stiner hit a two-run in the fifth and John Patterson had a solo in the seventh.

Ray Plantier was 3 for 4 for USIU (3-4). Grand Canyon College is 2-4.
