School Board OKs 6.3% Raise for 850 Workers

The Glendale School Board on Tuesday approved a one-year contract for the district’s clerical, maintenance and service workers.

About 850 employees will receive a 6.39% pay raise retroactive to Sept. 1, 1987.

They have been working without a contract since Aug. 31.

The board approval follows five months of negotiations between district representatives and Chapter 3 of the California School Employees Assn., which represents the workers.

“There were lots of differences across the table, but I think we got a really attractive deal,” said Travers Devine, the CSEA field representative who negotiated the agreement. “This puts them pretty well on a par with other employees in the Glendale School District.”

The new contract covers clerical workers, custodians, data processors, food service workers, maintenance workers, secretaries, plumbers, teaching aides and welders.

Teachers, management and other employees are covered by different contracts and have already reached agreements with the district for the 1987-1988 year.

The 6.39% increase includes a 2.79% cost of living adjustment, an additional 2% pay raise from state lottery funds, and 1.6% in savings from a new health plan, said Charles Duncan, director of personnel and employee relations for the school district.

Under the agreement, salaries range from $5.28 an hour for the lowest paid cafeteria worker to $20.24 an hour for a computer programmer analyst, he said.
