State Honors Bilingual Education Program
An innovative Glendale school district bilingual education program has been named one of nine outstanding programs in the state.
The California Department of Education honor last week makes it possible for those nine programs to apply for a $200,000-a-year federal grant to expand to other schools in their districts, Petrossian said.
About 40 programs nationwide will eventually receive the grant, she said.
The Glendale school district program, taught in grades four through six at three district elementary schools, uses a method called “sheltered English” to teach students with limited English skills the same curriculum as other students, but in simpler terms.
Since 1985, the district has received about $170,000 from the federal government to fund the program, director of intercultural education for the school district Alice Petrossian said.
About 300 programs in California receive similar funding.
