Local News in Brief : Waste Disposal Plan OKd
The Los Angeles City Council on Wednesday unanimously approved a $1.3-million pilot program that will permit residents throughout the city to legally and safely dispose of household hazardous wastes.
The program, expected to be launched in June, would be conducted during seven “round-up” days when residents in designated areas could take their old paint, motor oils, insecticides and cleaning agents to central collection points. The materials would be sorted and eventually hauled to a specially licensed landfill.
It is illegal to discard toxic refuse with other trash. If dumped at regular landfills, the toxics could seep into the ground water or trigger fires.
Included in the pilot project will be a $637,600 test of a door-to-door program for picking up toxic materials from 20,000 households in two Eastside council districts.
The city’s Bureau of Sanitation is expected to heavily promote the beginning of the two pilot programs.
