A Salvadoran who confessed to a role in the killing of the country’s most prominent human rights activist recanted and said he had been drugged and abused in jail. Jorge Alberto Miranda, 19, had said that he was a lookout last October while leftist guerrillas killed Herbert Ernesto Anaya, the president of the independent Salvadoran Human Rights Commission. Miranda said in a writ filed in a San Salvador court that he confessed because he was worn out from the harsh treatment and drug injections he was given in jail. Miranda’s confession in January was announced with much fanfare by Salvadoran President Jose Napoleon Duarte.
