THE COLLEGES : College Roundup : UC Irvine Scores a 5-2 Tennis Win for First-Ever Victory Over UCLA

Mike Cadigan and Shiege Kanroji of UC Irvine defeated Jason Netter and Paul Sholtz of UCLA, 6-1, 6-1, to clinch Irvine’s 5-2 victory Thursday in the first round of the National Invitational Collegiate men’s indoor tennis tournament being held in Louisville, Ky.

It was the first time in Irvine’s history that it has defeated UCLA.

Irvine (4-1) won four of the six singles matches, led by Trevor Kronemann, who defeated Pat Gilbraith, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1. Richard Lubner defeated Brian Garrow, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5; Mike Briggs defeated Netter, 7-5, 4-6, 6-2, and Kanroji defeated Goira Payer, 6-2, 6-4, for Irvine. Irvine plays USC in the second round today.

In Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. women’s basketball:

Nevada Las Vegas 90, Cal State Fullerton 48--Rene Czerwinski and Shari Netzel scored 17 points each to lead Nevada Las Vegas (17-5, 11-4) at the Thomas and Mack Center. Fullerton shot just 28% from the floor for the game, and no Fullerton player scored in double figures. Amy Torczon and Gena Miller led Fullerton (14-9, 9-4) with nine points each.

UNLV led, 45-27, at halftime.

In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. women’s basketball:

Cal Poly Pomona 74, Chapman 65--Marcine Edmonds scored 28 points and Niki Bracken added 13 for visiting Cal Poly Pomona (22-3, 10-0). Chapman (13-9, 4-5) took a 54-53 lead when Karan Polk hit a 15-foot jumper with 7:24 to go, but Pomona outscored Chapman, 8-0, over the next three minutes to take the lead for good. Polk hit 9 of 12 shots from the field and led the Panthers with 23 points. Jennifer Uecke added 16 points and Lisa Schumaker had a game-high 9 rebounds.

In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. women’s tennis:

Cal State Los Angeles 8, Chapman 1--Chapman’s No. 1 doubles team of Karen Bonnett and Michelle Dobeck picked up the only victory for Chapman (0-4, 0-2) at Los Angeles.
