A San Diego man convicted of stabbing a police dog was sentenced Friday to four years and eight months in state prison.
Declaring that Daniel Gwazda, 26, was “a menace to others,” San Diego Superior Court Judge William Kennedy rejected his request for probation.
Gwazda was convicted Dec. 29 of burglarizing an Allied Gardens home and of felony injury to a police dog, Gido, who suffered a wound in his back from a steak knife.
Gwazda was believed to be the first person prosecuted under the new police dog injury law.
After the Sept. 15, 1987, attack, Gido was awarded a medal by the San Diego Humane Society and received the San Diego Police Department’s first canine citation for bravery. Gido is a 5-year-old German shepherd and valued at $6,000.
