U.S. Men Seeking Sweep of Cuba in Volleyball Tonight

The United States men’s volleyball team will play host to Cuba tonight at 7:30 at San Diego State’s Peterson Gym in the final match of a five-match series.

The top-ranked U.S. team leads the series, 4-0, after rallying for a 3-2 victory over the third-ranked Cubans Thursday at Denver.

The Americans have seven members of the team that won the gold medal at the 1984 Olympics, the World Cup in 1985 and the World Championships in 1986.

Tickets are available at the door and at all Teleseat outlets and Great Western Bank branches. Prices are $8 and $5.

Fourth-ranked UC Santa Barbara defeated San Diego State, 15-13, 12-15, 15-9, 15-12, Friday night at Peterson Gym in a Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn. match.

Bill Boullianne had 26 kills for SDSU (6-8, 1-5 in league). Jose Bandara had 25 for Santa Barbara (14-4, 4-1).

SDSU next plays Feb. 29 at Peterson against No. 2 Penn State.

CYCLING

San Diego State and several other bicycling teams will get their seasons rolling at Fiesta Island on Mission Bay in the first of a two-day SDSU/Pepsi Challenge beginning today at 8 a.m.

UC San Diego, the University of San Diego and four other California universities are scheduled to participate.

Sunday, the racing moves to San Diego State’s fraternity row, again at 8 a.m.

The teams compete for points in a season-long series that culminates in May at UC Irvine. COLLEGE BASEBALL

Rob Brown struck out 9 and freshman catcher Eric Christopherson went 3 for 4 with 2 RBIs to lead San Diego State to a 9-2 home victory over Cal State Northridge.

Brown went 7 innings before getting relief help from Rusty Filter, who struck out 4 and walked 2.

SDSU (5-4) and Northridge (3-7) meet again tonight at 7.

Rick Doane, a freshman from Clairemont High, drove in two runs with a double in the three-run third inning as the University of San Diego took a 4-0 lead on the way to a 6-3 nonconference victory over Cal State Long Beach.

USD pitcher Lou Skertich allowed just 3 hits in the first 4 innings before Long Beach put together 5 in the fifth to close to within 4-3. But James Ferguson, a freshman, came on and went 3 innings, giving up just 2 hits and striking out 3 to earn the victory.

Mark Manor replaced Ferguson with two out and the tying run at the plate and struck out Sid Herrera to end the game.

USD (4-6) plays at Long Beach (2-8) today.

WOMEN’s BASKETBALL Point Loma Nazarene College, with four players scoring in double figures, defeated Cal Lutheran, 84-72, in Thousand Oaks.

Ann Duffy scored 22 points for Point Loma (19-9, 6-4 in the Golden State Athletic Conference). Laura Mars added 18 and Shannon Anderson and Suzie Jones scored 13 each. Cal Lutheran (5-19, 3-8) was led by Heidi Griffith with 18.

Sonya Carter scored 20 points and Fiona Murray added 18 to lead United States International to an 82-71 nonconference victory over Portland State at the Jewish Community Center.

The Gulls (13-6) led, 33-31, at the half but never trailed in the second half and led by as many as 16 points.
